Guide to Safety

Enclosed in each Chinese Lantern is an instruction leaflet.  Please read and follow instructions carefully.

  • Have easy access to water or a fire extinguisher.
  • Do not leave children unattended with lanterns.
  • Familiarize yourself fully with the instructions provided.
  • Make sure the wind is not stronger than 5 mph.
  • Ensure trees are not in the flight path.
  • Lanterns must be released more than 5 miles away from any airports.
  • Never use around dry crops.
  • Always wear sensible clothing that will not dangle around your hands or any flame.

Always check the direction of the wind prior to lighting your lantern to verify the flight path ensuring there are no obstacles. Each lantern needs to be fully open, not creased or at an angle.

Contact your local Coastguard station if you intend to use Chinese Lanterns near the coast, as they can get confused with distress flares.
